The passage of time affects us all and no matter how fresh-faced and beautiful you are in your twenties, lifestyle choices and genetics gradually add wrinkles, age spots and saggy bits to our faces as the years go by. Thankfully, due to the wonders of medical science, there are plenty of ways to keep the natural aging process at bay.

Cosmetic surgeons and beauty therapists have all kinds of sophisticated techniques to restore a youthful complexion. Some are only temporary, but if money is no object, there is no reason why you can’t confound your peers by looking younger every year. So what are the most popular facial rejuvenation treatments on offer these days?
A facelift is a major surgical procedure and definitely not for the fainthearted, but if carried out by a skilful surgeon, a facelift can easily knock twenty years or more from your face. The basic technique is simple: excess skin and fat are removed, the face is pulled up and back and then stitched in place behind the ears. This irons out wrinkles and restores a tight, smooth complexion reminiscent of youth.
Chemical peels are not as bad as they sound. A weak solution of glycolic acid is applied to the face. The acid burns away the outer layers of the kin, removing age spots and sun damage. Stronger solutions are used to treat fine lines and wrinkles around the mouth and chin. The new skin that grows back is free from wrinkles and fresh looking. The technique is very effective and can last many years if done skilfully.
Microdermabrasion and dermabrasion works in a similar way to a chemical peel in that the outer layer of skin is removed, thus allowing new skin to grow back in its place. Microdermabrasion is not as severe as the full-blown method, but it can reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. A full dermabrasion treatment uses a cone of sandpaper or a stiff brush to scrape the outer layers of skin away; a protective scab is formed, beneath which the new skin grows.
Botox is the ultimate lunchtime facial rejuvenation treatment. The botulinum toxin is injected into the face, where it temporarily paralyses the muscles and nerves, giving a smooth wrinkle free appearance. Celebrities are very fond of botox treatments and it is always easy to spot who has taken it to extremes by virtue of the fact that they are expressionless on the red carpet. However, if used sparingly, botox is great for reducing deep frown lines.
Laser Skin Resurfacing
Laser skin resurfacing is a relatively new technique that targets significant wrinkles and crow’s feet. Unlike a chemical peel or dermabrasion treatment, there is less surface damage to the skin, and therefore less bleeding, bruising and discomfort.
Facial rejuvenation treatments are not without risk and there are plenty of side effects to be aware of. Because of the risks involved, it is essential that you consult a qualified cosmetic surgeon before having any of the above procedures, if only to check whether there is anything better than CO2 and laser treatments. That way you won’t end up scarred for life.
